Just watched this video for my Young Adult Class for Doc Wat.
This song pretty much captures our uncertainty of the future, mistrust of institutions and those in authority and the resulting hedonism and narcissism of our culture.
We are obsessed with ourselves, going to the gym, posting selfies.
We really do not know who to trust. We do not trust institutions, be it church, school or government.
We are uncertain about love and relationships, partly because of commitment phobia.
I think his last stanza captures it:
Love ain't the answer, nor is work
the truth eludes me so much it hurts
I'm still having fun and I guess that's the key,
I'm a twentysomething and I'm keeping me.
Our generation is a huge shift from the past, where before marriage, a job, kids, social security and a pension were a given, today all we have is now. This isn't the only song that typifies our culture. Other songs could be One Direction "Live while we're young" Ke$ha "Crazy Kids" or the infamous Miley Cyrus and "Can't stop"
